Glossary of Terms


Direct Shipping Prohibited

Legal, regulated winery-to-consumer wine shipments are allowed.

Restricted Shipping

Legal, regulated winery-to-consumer wine shipments are allowed with significant restrictions.

Direct Shipping Prohibited

Does not allow for any legal form of the direct shipment of wine to consumers,

Direct-to-Consumer (DTC)

Refers to wine sales shipped via a common carrier from a winery directly to an adult consumer’s home or office address for the consumer’s personal use.

Permit Fee

Winery must obtain a permit or license from the state prior to making shipments to consumers in the state.

Volume Limit

Total amount of wine that may be legally shipped to consumer(s) over a specified period of time.

Product Registration

Product labels must be officially registered or identified in writing and submitted to appropriate agency before shipping those product labels to consumers in the state.

Sales Tax

Sales or use tax must be collected and remitted on DTC wine shipments into this region.

Excise Tax

DTC wine shipments into this region are subject to state excise tax.

Common Carrier Status

Approved destination state for direct-to-consumer wine shipments from a licensed winery who has signed a “wine shippers agreement” with one or both carriers. For more information on the common carriers’ wine shipping programs visit FedEx and UPS.

Off-Site

Refers to shipments made on behalf of a consumer who places the order via phone, fax or internet

On-Site

Refers to shipments made on behalf of a customer who places the order on the premises of the winery.
