Good Regulatory Principles for E-Labeling

Through FIVS, the global trade association representing wine producers, Wine Institute has led the development of principles that seek to share best practices for regulators to consider when allowing the off-label disclosure of certain mandatory and voluntary information. Grounded in what works well under new European Union nutrition and ingredient labeling rules — such as the flexibility to list wine ingredients and the nutrition panel on the e-label rather than on the physical label — the document also calls on governments to allow the use of a single QR code for multiple mandatory and voluntary information and requests that governments refrain from requiring text to identify the contents of the information accessible via the QR code. FIVS is working to share these principles with stakeholders including the European Commission, GS1 and World Wine Trade Group member countries (Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Georgia, New Zealand, South Africa and Uruguay), many of whom may consider regulation in this space in the coming years.
