American Wine Bill Opposition

AB 1585 (D-Connolly) was introduced on Jan. 14, 2026, to require that wine in California labeled as “American” be made from 100% American-grown winegrapes, replacing the longstanding 75% federal standard. The bill would take away the flexibility wineries rely on and adds new costs in an already challenging market. Adopting the recommendations of the Legal Subcommittee and Public Policy Committees, Wine Institute’s board unanimously affirmed opposition to AB 1585 at its March 10 board meeting in Sacramento. We have prepared a fact sheet on the bill.
