Geographic Indications (GIs)

Wine Institute continues to advocate for the protection of legitimate place names, recognizing the need for accurate representation of the origins of wines in all the world’s markets. The U.S. has one of the most rigorous regulatory systems in the world for protecting American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) and terms of geographic significance for all wine producers, assuring high standards for the growing U.S. wine market. In addition, Wine Institute advocates for common names because we believe that each country should be able to produce high quality products, under the names that have been associated with those products or style for decades.
