New Nutrition Calculator for Voluntary Labeling & Advertising Launched

Wine Institute has introduced a proprietary Nutrition Data Calculator for labeling and advertising which is now available for use on the members-only section of the Wine Institute website. The tool generates TTB-compliant nutrition serving facts information for voluntary use on labels and advertising.

TTB Ruling 2020-1, issued on Sept. 28, 2020, allows the use of databases and “typical values” or ranges to generate information on calories and carbohydrates for wine labels and advertising. The calculator eliminates the need for expensive testing of multiple batches of wine and provides nutrition information that is consistent with U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) food labeling regulations.

Wine Institute’s Technical Advisory Committee (WITAC) advocated for harmonization with FDA guidelines to allow wineries to voluntarily label and advertise nutrition information, and developed the tool. The new Nutrition Data Calculator supplements the existing Wine Institute calculator for restaurant menu nutrition information. That tool was developed to help wineries comply with FDA’s requirement that alcohol beverage suppliers disclose a specific set of nutrition information (total calories, sodium, total carbohydrates and sugars) to restaurant chains with 20 or more locations as of May 7, 2018.
