California Legislature Passes AB 720, Unlocking New Opportunities for Wineries to Connect with Consumers

We are proud to share that AB 720, a Wine Institute–sponsored bill in the California Senate, was unanimously approved with bipartisan support in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025. Our policy team worked to shepherd this legislation through the process, securing final passage at 1:30 a.m. before the legislature adjourned the 2025 legislative session. The bill now heads to Gov. Newsom’s desk for signature.

What AB 720 does: It creates an Estate Tasting Event Permit, allowing winegrowers to apply to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to host tasting events outside of their bonded premises — either on winery property or at non-adjacent vineyards under their control. In short, this new permit enables wineries to create “pop-up” tasting experiences at estate vineyard sites, bringing visitors closer to the vines, the soil and the story of California wine.

Wine Institute led a broad coalition of regional and statewide organizations in support of AB 720. This milestone reflects the power of a united wine community and underscores Wine Institute’s role in advancing policies that protect, promote and grow opportunities for our members.
